Anne Patterson is a set and costume designer
based in New York City, where her design work has appeared at Avery
Fisher and Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center; the Juilliard School;
the Brooklyn Academy of Music; the NY Theater Workshop; the Ensemble
Studio Theater; The Joyce; and St. Mark’s Dance Space. She has designed
thirteen operas including one world premiere and three US premieres for
the Aspen Music Festival. She has made her designs for Arena Stage in
DC, the Wilma Theater in Philadelphia, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra;
the Philadelphia Orchestra; the Fisher Center at Bard College, Pacific
Northwest Ballet; Ballet West; the Houston Ballet; The Kennedy Center;
Wolf Trap; and in Europe for the National Theatre, London and the
Scottish Ballet. PBS and the BBC have featured Ms. Patterson's
production design work as well.
Anne Patterson has collaborated with many world-renowned artists including:
Directors: Jonathan Miller, Molly Smith, Chris Ashley, Edward Berkeley, Blanka and Jiri Zizka.
Playwrights: Terrence McNally, Wendy Wasserstein, Doug Wright, Nilo Cruz, and Stephen Adly Guirgis.
Conductors: Robert Spano, Donald Runnicles, Dennis Russell Davies.
Composers: John Adams, Thomas Ades, Philip Glass, Augusta Reed Thomas, and Michael Torke.
Ms. Patterson has pioneered a new area of design for symphony orchestras in creating installations for the Brooklyn Philharmonic, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra and American Symphony Orchestra. This introduction of scenic elements and lighting effects has revolutionized the concert experience.
Career highlights for Ms. Patterson include "Cosi Fan Tutte" directed by Jonathan Miller at BAM's Harvey Theater, "Every Good Boy Deserves Favor" by Stoppard/Previn for the Philadelphia Orchestra, and “Cabaret” at Arena Stage.
She received a 2006 Creative Capital Grant to create “Mercury Soul”, an installation/musical collaboration with composer Mason Bates. In this project Anne’s visuals will interact with Mason’s electro-acoustic and chamber music. Mercury Soul will premier at mezzanine in San Francisco in January, 2008.
Upcoming projects include a new musical by Tim Acito, "The Women of Brewster Place". Directed by Molly Smith, it will premier at the Alliance in Atlanta in September, 2007 and then move to the Arena in October, 2007.
Ms. Patterson received a BA in Architecture from Yale University and a M.F.A. in theater design from The Slade School of Art in London.
