ERHARD ROM (scenic designer) has designed settings for more than 100 productions nationally. Some of his most recent projects include designs for the opera Carmen, Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, Volpone, a world premiere commissioned by the Wolf Trap Opera, and Pontalba, another world premiere commissioned by New Orleans Opera in celebration of the Bicentennial of the Louisiana Purchase. Other highlights include revivals of Tod Machover’s opera Resurrection, and Ned Rorem’s opera Miss Julie.
His work includes numerous engagements with Boston Lyric Opera, Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, Virginia Opera, and Lyric Opera of Kansas City. He has also been a frequent guest at the Wolf Trap Opera, the Chautauqua Opera, and the Manhattan School of Music. His work has been seen at Syracuse Stage and Geva Theatre Center in upstate New York for several seasons. Other Theatre Companies he has worked for include: Merrimack Repertory Theatre, Interact Theatre, and Woolly Mammoth Theatre in Washington DC, where he recently designed Neena Beeber’s new play, Jump/Cut. He has also designed for ABC Television, Minnesota Opera, Opera Festival of New Jersey, Opera Grand Rapids, Ordway Music Theatre, Connecticut Opera, Madison Opera, Curtis Institute of Music, San Francisco Opera Center, and the Oklahoma Mozart Festival for which he designed the world premiere of the opera, Ochelata’s Wedding (libretto by Joe Sears and Jaston Williams with music by Jean-Michel Damase). Future engagements include Jane Eyre for Opera Theatre of Saint Louis and Aida for Boston Lyric Opera (on the Boston common).
Mr. Rom received his BA in Music, from the University of Washington, and his M.F.A. in Design from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. His primary teacher at NYU was John Conklin whom he later assisted. He taught scenic design at Ithaca College from the fall of 1995 through the spring of 2000. In 1999 and again in 2003 he won awards for creative achievement in opera from the New Orleans Opera. Mr. Rom is a member of the United Scenic Artists, Local 829. He is a native of Seattle Washington, and is currently living in the Washington DC area with his wife and seven-year-old son.
